Privacy Policy — Skein
Last updated: June 5, 2026
Skein is a browser extension that helps you organize chats across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — with folders, a prompt library, full-text search, and export. This policy explains what data Skein handles and how.
What data Skein collects
Skein stores chat metadata locally in your browser: conversation titles, URLs, platform identifier, folder assignments, and short text snippets. It also stores folders you create, prompts you save, and UI preferences (such as which sections are collapsed).
The export feature reads the content of the currently open AI conversation page to generate a downloadable Markdown file. Skein delivers that file directly to you — it does not store conversation content.
If you enable the AI-assisted prompt generation feature, your API key is stored exclusively in your browser's chrome.storage.local and is used only to authenticate requests sent directly to the AI provider you choose. Skein does not transmit, store, or otherwise handle your API key — it stays on your device. The description you enter for prompt generation is sent only within the body of that direct request to the provider.
Where your data is stored
All data is stored exclusively in your browser's chrome.storage.local. Skein does not operate any server, and your data is never transmitted to the developer or any third party.
No account required
Skein has no registration, no login, and no user account system. Everything works offline-first, inside your browser.
No tracking or analytics
Skein contains no analytics, telemetry, or tracking code of any kind. It does not set cookies. It does not collect usage data.
Third-party services
By default, Skein does not communicate with any external services and runs entirely within your browser. However, if you choose to enable the optional "AI-assisted prompt generation" feature and provide your own third-party AI service API key (such as an OpenAI API key), Skein will use that key to send requests directly from your browser to the AI provider you select. These requests go straight to the third-party service — they never pass through any server operated by the Skein developer.
Optional AI features / Third-party AI providers
The AI-assisted prompt generation feature is disabled by default. To use it, you must manually enter your own API key from a supported third-party AI provider (such as OpenAI) in the extension settings.
When you use this feature, your input (the prompt description) and your API key are sent directly from your browser to the provider you selected. These requests are governed by that provider's own privacy policy and terms of service — you should review the applicable policies of any AI provider you choose to use (for example, OpenAI's Privacy Policy).
Skein itself does not receive, record, or have access to the data exchanged between your browser and the AI provider during these requests.
Permissions
Skein requests the following browser permissions, and uses each only for the stated purpose:
- sidePanel — to open the extension's sidebar where you manage folders, prompts, and exports.
- storage — to save your folders, conversation metadata, prompts, and preferences in
chrome.storage.local. - tabs — to detect when you are on a supported AI platform tab, so the sidebar can communicate with it for syncing and export.
- activeTab — to interact with the currently focused tab when you trigger a sync or export action.
- Host permissions (
chatgpt.com,chat.openai.com,claude.ai,gemini.google.com) — to read conversation lists and message content from these pages so Skein can sync metadata and export conversations. Skein does not read or interact with any other websites.
Data deletion
Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data. You can also clear the data at any time through your browser's extension settings.
Children's privacy
Skein is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
Updates will be posted on this page with a revised date. Continued use of Skein after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
